A breaker that trips once a year when you ran the toaster, the microwave, and the coffee maker on the same circuit is normal. A breaker that trips every few days, trips at the same time of day, trips when nothing obvious is running, or refuses to hold for more than a few seconds after reset is not normal. In Ponte Vedra and the surrounding St. Johns County coastal communities, repeated breaker trips often trace back to specific local conditions — salt-air corrosion, lightning damage, humidity-stressed connections, and the panel and wiring patterns common in coastal homes built in the 1980s and 1990s.
A breaker that trips repeatedly is detecting one of three real electrical conditions on the circuit it protects: an overload (too much current for the breaker rating), a short circuit (a direct connection between hot and neutral or hot and ground), or an arc fault or ground fault (current finding an unintended path). The breaker is doing its job. The job of an electrician is to find what is causing the condition and fix it, rather than swapping the breaker and hoping the problem goes away.
Coastal homes face constant exposure to salt-laden humid air. Inside outdoor disconnects, meter cans, and outdoor outlet boxes, the chloride content slowly attacks copper and aluminum connections. Corroded connections develop resistance, heat up, and eventually arc — and arc-fault breakers (AFCIs) detect that arcing and trip. NE Florida lightning frequency is among the highest in the United States. A breaker that worked fine in spring and starts nuisance-tripping in late summer may have been damaged by a July or August storm.

The National Electrical Code drives most of the safety requirements that apply to this work. NEC Article 210.8 mandates GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, laundries, outdoor receptacles, and anywhere within six feet of a sink — the goal is to shut the circuit off in milliseconds when current finds a path through a person instead of through the intended wires. NEC Article 210.12 mandates arc-fault protection on most residential branch circuits, which catches the kind of low-energy arcing inside damaged insulation that starts hidden wall fires. Bringing a home into compliance with these articles is one of the most direct safety improvements an upgrade delivers.
Before calling, a few things are worth checking.
Identify which circuit the breaker controls — the panel directory should label it. If the directory is wrong or missing, walk through the home with the breaker off and identify which outlets, fixtures, and equipment lose power. Note this for the electrician’s visit.
Unplug everything on the circuit and try to reset. If the breaker holds with nothing plugged in, the fault is in one of the devices. Plug them back in one at a time to find which one trips the breaker.
Check for water exposure. If the circuit includes pool, hot tub, or outdoor equipment, walk those locations and look for standing water, recent sprinkler issues, or recent rain that hit equipment that should not have gotten wet.
Look at the breaker and panel. If you see scorching, melted plastic, brown stains, or smell anything burning, stop. Leave the breaker off. Call an electrician immediately.
NE Florida humidity stays above seventy percent for months at a stretch and corrodes electrical components faster than the same parts last in drier climates. Coastal homes in Ponte Vedra, Nocatee, and St. Augustine fight salt-laden air on top of that, and salt accelerates terminal oxidation inside panels, disconnects, and any outdoor fixture not rated for damp or wet locations. Several actions make a tripping-breaker problem worse.
Do not keep resetting the breaker hoping the problem will resolve itself. Each reset stresses the breaker and the downstream wiring. If the breaker trips immediately on reset, the fault is still there.
Do not replace the breaker with a larger one. The wire size is matched to the original breaker rating. A larger breaker lets more current flow than the wire can safely handle, and the wire overheats inside the wall instead of the breaker tripping. This is how electrical fires start.
Do not bypass the breaker or wire around it. The breaker is the safety device.
Do not open the panel cover to investigate. The bus bars and lugs behind the cover are always live unless the utility pulls the meter. Panel work requires a licensed electrician.
Florida has the highest density of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes of any state in the United States, and thunderstorm-heavy summer afternoons from June through September push every home electrical system harder than the rest of the year. A direct strike is rare; a nearby strike that sends a damaging surge into the home wiring through the utility lines, the cable feed, or the phone line is common. A few NEC articles affect how an electrician fixes the underlying issue.
NEC Article 210.8 requires GFCI protection in many residential locations including outdoor outlets, pool equipment circuits, hot tub circuits, and within six feet of any sink. A tripping problem on these circuits is often the GFCI doing its job. Replacing a GFCI with a regular breaker to “stop the tripping” is illegal and dangerous.
NEC Article 210.12 requires AFCI protection on most residential branch circuits. AFCI breakers detect the kind of low-level arcing that causes most house fires. Nuisance AFCI tripping is sometimes legitimate (real arc faults from damaged wiring) and sometimes false trips on unusual loads. A real electrician distinguishes between them.
NEC Article 250 covers grounding and bonding. Improper grounding causes nuisance tripping and intermittent shock hazards.
Electrical work in Florida must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor registered with the DBPR ECLB. Repair work that involves replacing breakers, repairing damaged wiring, or modifying circuits requires permits through the St. Johns County building department for Ponte Vedra.
A real diagnostic visit for a tripping breaker starts with conversation — when did it start, what changed, what is on the circuit, what have you tried. Possible. Surges from nearby strikes can damage breaker contacts, outlet wiring, and GFCI/AFCI internals in ways that do not always cause immediate failure. The damage develops over weeks or months and eventually shows up as nuisance tripping.
