Circuit Breaker Tripped and Won't Reset? Emergency Repair Guide

When a circuit breaker trips, the standard fix is simple — flip it all the way off, then back on. When that does not work, you have a different problem. A breaker that refuses to hold the reset position is doing exactly what it is designed to do: protecting you from a real fault on the circuit. Knowing why that is happening and what to do next is the difference between safely solving the problem and starting a fire trying to force it. This guide walks NE Florida homeowners through what causes it, what is safe to try, and when to stop trying and call an electrician.

Why won’t my breaker reset?

A circuit breaker that will not reset is detecting a continuous fault on the circuit. The breaker trips when current exceeds its rating (overload), when current finds an unintended path to ground (ground fault), or when current arcs between conductors (short circuit or arc fault). When you reset it and it immediately trips again, the fault is still there, and the breaker is doing its job by refusing to energize the line.

The four most common causes

Overloaded circuit

The simplest cause. Too many devices drawing too much current on a single circuit. The breaker trips, you unplug some loads, you reset, and it holds. If you reset without removing load and it trips again, the circuit is still over the rated amperage and you cannot run those loads together on that breaker.

Common NE Florida overload scenarios include kitchen circuits running a microwave, coffee maker, and air fryer simultaneously; bathroom circuits running a hair dryer and an electric heater; or garage circuits running a freezer, a compressor, and a power tool. Splitting the loads across multiple circuits — or having an electrician add a new circuit — is the long-term fix.

Short circuit

A short circuit happens when a hot wire touches a neutral wire or another hot wire directly, allowing current to flow without going through any load. The breaker trips immediately, almost instantaneously, and refuses to reset because the short is still in place.

Causes include damaged extension cords, failed appliances with internal shorts, damaged wiring inside walls (often from a nail or screw driven into a wire), or burned-out wall switches and outlets. A short circuit is a real fire risk and the reason behind many house fires that start inside walls. If you suspect a short, do not keep resetting the breaker.

Ground fault

A ground fault happens when current finds an unintended path to ground — through a person, through water, through a damaged appliance with a metal case. Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) trip very quickly to prevent shock; regular breakers trip on larger ground faults but more slowly.

In NE Florida bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor circuits, GFCI protection is required by NEC Article 210.8 specifically to handle ground faults safely. A tripped GFCI that will not reset usually means water has entered an outlet, appliance, or junction box, or that an appliance plugged into the circuit has a damaged ground.

Arc fault

Arc faults are the small, intermittent arcing between damaged conductors that cause most electrical fires. Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs), required by NEC Article 210.12 on most residential branch circuits, detect these patterns and trip even when current is well within normal range. An AFCI that will not reset means it is detecting ongoing arcing somewhere on the circuit — a damaged wire, a loose connection, or a failing appliance.

Florida homeowner insurance carriers have grown stricter about Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels in recent years. Several carriers will not write a new policy on a home with these panels, and a few will not renew an existing policy without proof of replacement. The safety case for replacing them does not soften with time — both brands have documented histories of breakers that fail to trip during overloads, which is exactly the failure mode that starts panel fires. Even where coverage is available, premiums and deductibles often reflect the added risk. Replacement is the only fix; AFCI or GFCI retrofits do not address the underlying breaker failure.

What is safe to try yourself

A few things are safe to check before calling an electrician.

Unplug everything on the circuit and try to reset. If the breaker holds with nothing plugged in, the fault is in one of the devices, not the wiring. Plug devices back in one at a time until the breaker trips again — that device is your problem.

Check for tripped GFCIs. A dead outlet or a circuit that will not energize often comes from a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the same circuit. Walk through your kitchen, bathrooms, garage, laundry room, and any outdoor outlets, and press the reset button on each GFCI you find.

Flip the breaker fully off, then fully on. Breakers have a positive-off position past the middle “tripped” position. Flipping a breaker from tripped directly to on does not always work; you need to go fully off first.

Look and smell at the panel. If you see scorching, melted plastic, or smell burning, stop. Do not reset. Call an electrician.

Florida has the highest density of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes of any state in the United States, and thunderstorm-heavy summer afternoons from June through September push every home electrical system harder than the rest of the year. A direct strike is rare; a nearby strike that sends a damaging surge into the home wiring through the utility lines, the cable feed, or the phone line is common. NE Florida homeowners who have lived here through a few storm seasons usually have a story about a fried garage-door opener, a dead refrigerator board, or a router that stopped working after a loud night.

What you should not do

Several things make a bad situation worse.

Do not keep resetting a breaker that will not hold. Each reset stresses the breaker and the wire. If a breaker trips immediately on reset, leave it off and call an electrician.

Do not replace the breaker with a larger one. A 15-amp circuit is wired with conductors rated for 15 amps. Replacing the breaker with a 20-amp lets more current flow than the wire can safely carry, and the wire overheats inside the wall instead of the breaker tripping. This is how electrical fires start.

Do not bypass the breaker with a jumper or fuse. Same principle — the breaker is the safety device. Removing it removes the safety.

Do not work in an energized panel. The breaker handles are accessible from outside the panel cover. The bus bars and lugs behind that cover are always live unless the utility pulls the meter. Opening a panel without training is the most dangerous thing a homeowner can do.

The National Electrical Code drives most of the safety requirements that apply to this work. NEC Article 210.8 mandates GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, laundries, outdoor receptacles, and anywhere within six feet of a sink — the goal is to shut the circuit off in milliseconds when current finds a path through a person instead of through the intended wires. NEC Article 210.12 mandates arc-fault protection on most residential branch circuits, which catches the kind of low-energy arcing inside damaged insulation that starts hidden wall fires. Bringing a home into compliance with these articles is one of the most direct safety improvements an upgrade delivers.

When to call an emergency electrician

Some symptoms move this from a routine problem to an emergency.

A burning smell from the panel, an outlet, or a switch on the affected circuit. Insulation is overheating somewhere. Stop, leave the breaker off, call an electrician.

Visible scorch marks, melted plastic, or discolored surfaces on the panel, switch plates, or outlets. The damage you can see is usually a fraction of what is happening inside.

Sparks or popping sounds from outlets, switches, or the panel. Live current is finding an unintended path.

A breaker that is warm or hot to the touch even when in the off position. The breaker itself may have failed in a way that internal contacts are still partially conducting.

Repeated trips on multiple breakers, especially after a recent storm, lightning event, or known surge. The service-entrance or panel itself may have been damaged.

Water in contact with or above the panel — from a roof leak, a burst pipe, or storm flooding. Do not approach. Cut power at the main if you can do so safely, and call.

NE Florida-specific causes

A few causes show up more often in NE Florida than in other regions.

Lightning damage from frequent summer thunderstorms can affect breakers in ways that do not show up immediately. A breaker that worked fine in May and starts nuisance-tripping in August may have been damaged by a July storm.

Humidity-related corrosion in older outdoor disconnects and meter cans, especially in Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine, and other coastal homes. Corroded connections cause intermittent arcing that trips AFCI breakers months after the corrosion starts.

Pool equipment, irrigation pump, and outdoor lighting circuits that take water during storms or sprinkler malfunctions are common ground-fault sources in NE Florida.

Older FPE Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have documented failure histories where breakers either fail to trip on real faults or fail to hold on legitimate loads. A NE Florida home with one of these panels has a panel-level problem, not a circuit-level problem.

Florida licensing matters

Electrical work in Florida must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor registered with the DBPR ECLB. Breaker replacements, panel work, and circuit fault repair are not jobs for a handyman, no matter how confident they sound. Ask for the contractor’s license number before any work begins.

Replacing a breaker requires working in an energized panel. The bus bars behind the breakers are live unless the utility pulls the meter, and the energy available in a residential panel is enough to cause severe injury or death. Florida code requires licensed electrical contractor work for panel repairs. Replace the breaker yourself only if you are trained for live panel work and accept the responsibility.

That pattern almost always indicates a short circuit or a hard ground fault still present on the circuit. The breaker is doing its job. Stop resetting it and find the cause — usually a damaged extension cord, a failed appliance, or damaged wiring. If you cannot find the cause by unplugging devices one at a time, call an electrician.

Both happen. AFCIs are designed to detect the low-level arcing that causes fires, and they sometimes also trip on legitimate but unusual loads like older vacuum cleaners or some power tools. A real electrician can distinguish between a legitimate arc-fault detection and a false trip. Replacing an AFCI with a regular breaker to “solve” the nuisance is illegal and dangerous.

If the affected breaker is making any unusual sound, smell, or visible signs of damage, yes — turn off the main breaker and call an electrician. If the affected breaker is simply tripped and not resetting and there are no warning signs, leave it off and call during business hours unless the loss of power is life-safety related.
